How Can Travelers Prepare for a Royal Caribbean Cruise?

I'm planning a cruise with the Royal Caribbean International Cruise Line and was wondering what other travelers usually do to prepare before departure.
So far, I'm thinking about more than just packing. I want to make sure I understand the sailing details, required travel documents, cabin options, embarkation process, and what I should realistically budget for once onboard.
I'm also considering transportation to the departure port. It seems like arriving early could be worthwhile, especially if there are flights or other transportation involved before embarkation.
For packing, I'm planning to check the itinerary and expected weather first rather than assuming the same things will be useful for every cruise. I'm also curious whether it's worth researching dining options, shore excursions, entertainment, and the ship layout before getting onboard.
For anyone who has taken a cruise recently:
  • What did you wish you had prepared earlier?
  • Was there anything you overlooked before embarkation?
  • Did you set aside a separate budget for onboard expenses and excursions?
  • Was researching the ship layout helpful before departure?
I'd be interested in hearing practical preparation tips and experiences from other travelers.
