The looked as though they had turned over a new leaf under new head coach Willie Desjardins during the 2014-15 campaign. Having mi sed the postseason the year before, the Canucks were vastly improved last season. They surged to 101 points and finished second in the Pacific before an early postseason exit at the hands of the upstart Calgary Flames. The latest from SportsLineHowever, the decisions made this summer looked le s like the kind youd Markus Golden Jersey expect from a team building on a positive run from the year before. GM Jim Benning faced a lot of criticism for some of his moves, most notably, the choice of trading goaltender instead of expensive veteran . When Benning admitted at a town hall with fans that he could have traded Miller before ultimately deciding not to, he was roundly booed. The team also traded away (for ) and . They let depth players and Brad Richardson walk in free agency. There was also the major trade of No. 2 center and defensive prospect to the for . Theyre banking on Sutter being a No. 2 center despite a lack of statistical evidence that he fits in that role. Before Sutter even had a chance to prove he can handle that, the Canucks signed him to a five-year, $21.875 million extension.Much of the offseason turnover was not unwelcome, but losing fan-favorite Lack and longtime defensive stalwart Bieksa had to sting at least a little. The other question this turnover creates, was did it make the Canucks better? As constructed, Vancouver can compete in the Pacific Division. Making the playoffs is far from a guarantee, but the same can be said for a lot of teams in the tough Western Conference. The questions this offseason created are le s about this year and more about the long-term, though. Whats the vision for the future? That's not incredibly clear right now.The Canucks core has been getting older and theres not enough of a youth movement yet to start replacing them as they decline. Theres no doubt they still can compete now, but there has to be more of an eye on the future for this organization to be ready when they can no longer lean on Daniel and . New additions: Brandon Sutter, Brandon Prust, Key lo ses: Nick Bonino, Eddie Lack, Kevin Bieksa, Shawn Matthias, <player idref=on, Zack Daniel Jones Jersey Ka sianTop returning scorers: (82 GP, 20-5676), Henrik Sedin (82 GP, 18-5573), (79 GP, 31-3263)Salary against cap: $69,494,167Cap space remaining: $1,905,833Biggest question heading into the season: Will Vancouvers goaltending hold up enough to keep them competitive? The Canucks will have to hope Brandon Sutters arrival leads to better second-wave scoring this season as the top line of Henrik and Daniel Sedin and Radim Vrbata were carrying the mail for the offense last season. As important as scoring will be, its the goaltending that will probably be the difference for this team. The decision to let Lack go could not have been easy, given the players popularity and the fact that he had the best numbers of Vancouvers netminders with a .921 save percentage in 41 appearances.Miller, who owns a hefty $6 million cap hit, had a .911 save percentage in 45 games. That represented the lowest save percentage for Miller since 2006-07, his second full NHL season. Hes also 35, probably with his best years behind him. Miller still can be an above-average starting goalie, but expecting him to be among the leagues best again is probably overly-optimistic. Thats where comes in. Hes the guy that forced Cor'dale Flott Jersey the Canucks to trade one of their two goaltenders from the NHL roster last offseason. At 25 years old, Markstrom has already been on a roller coaster ride of a career. A former top prospect of the , he appeared to be trending towards bust before he broke out with a stellar AHL season last year in Utica where he carried a .934 save percentage. However, any Willie Mays Jersey time Markstrom has come up to the NHL, hes mostly underwhelmed. He has 50 games under his belt with an unsightly .896 career save percentage. Can he take that next step? Its anyones gue s at this point. The net almost certainly belongs to Miller, but if he falters or gets injured like he did last season, the Canucks may not be totally secure in their Plan B. Well only find out with time. Season outlookThe Canucks still have a great first line with the Sedins and Vrbata. Even as those guys get older, they showed last year that theyve still got it with 212 points combined. Its everything after them that remains in question.Secondary scoring is going to be a major concern. Right now, its not even totally clear who will join Brandon Sutter on the second line. Alexandre Burrows seems a likely candidate for the top-six, but after him, there are some big questions. could provide some support, but has a light NHL track record. is probably going to have to take another big step developmentally if hes going to be about to boost scoring depth in the bottom six. Weve already been over the goaltending, but even the defense is full of questions. Theres no real top Evan Neal Jersey -flight defenseman, though Alex Edler and have been reliable veterans. has really rounded out into a solid top-four defender. had a tough year last season, but may be needed even more this year. and Matt Bartkowski should provide a serviceable bottom pairing. Its not an awe-inspiring group, but theyre adequate. The Canucks are going to be one of the more intriguing teams to follow just because all of the evidence would suggest theyre due for a step back this year. All of the lo ses from last years roster with few impact additions do not make for a rosy outlook. But we saw a wildly unpredictable season in the Pacific Division last year, which allowed anyone with a moderately competitive roster to stay in the race to the end.Vancouver is probably a middle-of-the-pack team right now in the Western Conference. The playoffs are certainly po sible, but theyre going to have to claw all season to keep it interesting. .
